Painted Powder Glass Beads  Recycled glass is broken into small pieces for translucent beads, or ground to a   fine powder using a mortar and pestle for opaque beads. The glass is put into a  clay mold, then melted in a kiln.  After cooling down, the beads are painted  with a wet mix of dyed glass powder applied with a thin stalk of cassava then baked again to fix the colors.  The beads are polished by rubbing them together with sand and water on a smooth stone.

Rwandan Peace Baskets & Ornaments have been used throughout Rwandan history for storage, presentation of wedding gifts, and, as a testament to their importance to Rwandan life, an image of a peace basket is featured at the heart of the official seal of Rwanda.
